Cathy Ragland has been gardening since she was eight years old. In adulthood, this hobby led her to build a greenhouse in her own backyard. Over the years, Ragland has learned her craft through on-hands experience. She has tested out growing techniques. Along the way, Ragland made note of what works and what to avoid. When it comes to gardening, she has become the go-to-person among family, friends, and co-workers. Ragland said she wants them to succeed. She sees gardening as a fun learning process.
Ragland has heard many customers say they love their plants, but they kill them. Ragland said she wants her customers to, “enjoy the plants that they buy by understanding the requirements.” She hopes to teach others what she knows. ”Just passing it along. Just like grandma did,” said Ragland.
She also passes on the tradition at home with her 10-year-old grandson. He helps her plant seeds and watches the next steps. Ragland said, “Whenever they (children) see something grow from seeds, they love that.” Her grandson has accompanied her to many farmers markets in the area. According to Cathy, he is becoming quite the sales man. She enjoys when he comes along. Speaking of her grandchildren she said, “Once they grow up I can’t turn the clock back.”
Gardening is the perfect way to spend time with your family and start a discussion amongst friends.
Start a tradition. Pick up some plants for your own backyard.
